Protests erupt outside Kasba Police station as 3 arrested in alleged Kolkata college gang rape
Umesh Pal, the key witness in the 2005 Raju Pal murder case, was shot dead at his residence in Prayagraj on Friday evening, police said.
Prayagraj Police Commissioner Ramit Sharma told reporters that Umesh Pal was attacked with crude bombs and shot dead outside his house this evening. Two of the accused were also injured in the attack.
Umesh was the main witness to the murder of Bahujan Samaj Party MLA Raju Pal in 2005. The main accused in Raju Pal's murder is mafia politician Atiq Ahmed, who is currently lodged in a Gujarat jail.
The seriously injured Umesh Pal was taken to Swaroop Rani Nehru Hospital, where he succumbed to his injuries during treatment, police said. One of the gunmen injured in the attack remains in critical condition, while the other gunman is undergoing surgery, police said.
Sharma said efforts are on to identify the assailants based on CCTV footage of the area. A case has been registered at Dhoomanganj police station on the complaint of the victim's family members.
